Abdullah Asks UN to Impose Sanctions on Taliban Leaders

CEO of the National Unity Government (NUG) Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday called on the UN Security Council’s Sanctions Committee to improve monitoring mechanisms and impose sanctions on Taliban’s leaders including Mullah Haibatullah Akhunzada, Abdullah’s office said in a statement Sunday night.

Abdullah held a meeting in Kabul with the UNSC’s sanctions committee head Kairat Umarov on Sunday.

According to the statement issued by the CEO’s office, Abdullah said: “Armed Taliban are ruthless killers of innocent Afghanistan people and they are responsible for the destruction of this country. They should be deemed as terrorists.”

He also said the countries that categorize terrorists and good and bad groups are “making a big mistake”.

Abdullah also asked the sanctions committee to strengthen their observation and assessment mechanism to limit activities and movement of terrorists and bring their financial resources to a halt.

According to the statement, Umarov reiterated their commitment to working and standing with the Afghan government in preventing security threats and bringing peace to the country.

Haibatullah was appointed the militant group’s leader about one and a half years ago after the death of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour.
