Abdullah Condemns Attacks on Afghan Media

CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday strongly condemned attacks on the media in the country and said any hostile act against the media and journalists was unacceptable.

He said that press freedom was one of the major gains of the Afghan people and that government will protect the media at any cost.

“Freedom of expression is part of the achievements of the people of Afghanistan. It is attacked many times and it is under target all the time. I express my condolences to the victims’ families and meanwhile I commend the bravery and courage of the (Shamshad) TV station’s employees who resumed their broadcasts sharply after the attack ended,” Abdullah said.

Responding to Tuesday’s attack by Daesh against Shamshad TV in Kabul, a number of lawmakers in parliament have described the attack as an attack against freedom of speech.

They said that media outlets were still under threat in the country and that government should take solid measures to ensure the security of the media and journalist community.

The MPs further stated that the attack on journalists and the media was a major crime.

“Taliban, Daesh and other terrorist groups’ acts are against Islam. They kill worshippers at mosques, they kill children and women,” said Kubra Mustafawi, an MP.

The statements come only a day after two militants reportedly associated to Daesh carried out a coordinated attack on Shamshad TV in Kabul killing at least one person and wounding 20 others. The attack was widely condemned by both the international and local community.
