Afghanistan’s Neighbors Asked To Support New US Strategy

The Afghan government on Friday said Afghanistan’s neighbors and countries in the region should not worry about the new US strategy and instead, they need to join the anti-terror campaign with Kabul and its allies.

“Pakistan is mostly worried about the new US strategy more than any other country in the region,” said Mujib Rahman Rahimi, spokesman for Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah. “Pakistan should use the chance and cooperate with the Afghan government and the United States; otherwise, actions will be taken that would worry Pakistan.”

Following the announcement of the new US strategy on Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the new policy will lead Afghanistan to ‘nowhere’.

He said Kabul sees the new strategy helpful for Afghanistan’s security.

“The strategy is not only good for the security sector, but also it will positively impact the economic development, good governance, anti-corruption campaign and other big plans (in Afghanistan),” Rahimi said.

Under the new strategy, terrorists’ safe heavens will be targeted without consideration of their location.

“Pakistan should take action against the groups which exist on other side of the (Durand) line,” acting interior minister Wais Ahmad Barmak said at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Some Afghan officials said the regional countries’ concerns about the new strategy would complicate Afghanistan’s crisis.

“Pakistan wants to have influence on the Afghan government. It has never wanted peace and stability in Afghanistan,” said Amanullah Hotaki, former head of Uruzgan Provincial Council.
