Afghanistan Listed As A Disaster-Prone Country: IFRC

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released its annual report on natural disasters for 2016 and placed Afghanistan among those countries most frequently hit by such events.

According to the report, more than 674 natural disasters were recorded around the world in 2016 and 100 of these occurred in Afghanistan alone.

The report states that more than 70 Afghans were killed as a result of natural disasters in 2016.

The report also points out that 32,550 people were killed in other parts of the world in 574 natural disasters.

In addition, 108 million people were affected worldwide by natural disasters in 2016 and financial losses incurred in such events was estimated at $70.3 billion USD.

“Afghanistan is in a complicated situation right now; aside from the effects of climate change at a global level, what adds to the complexity of the issue is conflict, poverty, unemployment, a weak economy and above all it is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world,” said Mohammad Naeem Dindar, secretary general of IFRC.

The IFRC report cites that annually $3.3 trillion USD is allocated for the relief and rescue operations of natural disasters. However, only a $100 million USD is allocated for programs aimed to enhance awareness about the dangers of natural disasters.

“We in Afghanistan have always talked about the establishment of an institution which can handle the natural disaster issue,” said state minister of natural disaster management Wais Ahmad Barmak.

Based on reports, over the past twenty years, more than 15,000 Afghans have lost their lives in natural disasters and tens of thousands of others have been affected.

Government statistics indicate that last year more than one million Afghans were displaced due to conflict and disasters.
