Aide Warns Of Repercussions Amid Noor Saga

Responding to the statement of Jamiat-e-Islami party on the ousting of Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor, Afzal Hadid, a close aide to Noor, and chairman of the Balkh provincial council, said on Wednesday that the statement did not convey the message that the dismissal of Noor was the "red line".

He said the statement did not convey a firm enough message to government to review its dismissal of the governor.

“It was decided that the dismissal of Atta Mohammad is the red line,” said Hadid.

Jamiat-e-Islami party issued a statement late Tuesday and called on President Ashraf Ghani to review his decision regarding the ousting of Noor.

The statement comes after the Presidential Palace said on Monday that Ghani had approved the resignation of Noor, who is also the chief executive of Jamiat.

Hadid warned that Afghanistan would face a serious crisis if government does not deal with this issue properly.

The Jamiat statement comes after two days of meetings between members of the party who announced their support for Noor and said: “The resignation announced by the Presidential Palace is not legitimate.”

It also said that based on the National Unity Government (NUG) agreement, any “unilateral decision and one without approval of the other party would affect the principle of partnership and remove the legitimacy of government.”

In the statement, Jamiat-e-Islami has said that if the Presidential Palace does not review its monopolistic decision, Jamiat will resort to every legitimate option to defend the people of Afghanistan.

"If the Presidential Palace does not reconsider its one-sided and monopolistic action which is exploiting the presence of the international community, Jamiat-e Islami will invalidate the National Unity Government agreement and will employ all options to defend the legitimate rights of the people of Afghanistan," read the statement.

But residents in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, called on all sides to show restraint and resolve the issue peacefully.

“The people of Afghanistan do not support any sort of political or military tension,” said a resident of Balkh, Sayed Mukhtar.

“In their meetings with the honorable governor, the Ulema Council and parties announced their support for him,” said Mawlawi Zabiullah, deputy head of Balkh Ulema Council.

But a source told TOLOnews on condition of anonymity that Noor has not accepted Mohammad Dawoud as his replacement and has instead recommended Farhad Azimi to be appointed as governor.

According to the source, Noor has also said that if government returns the control of two ministries and two embassies to Jamiat-e-Islami, he will resign from his post within two weeks.

Meanwhile, Dawoud said in a Facebook page message that he respects the statement issued by Jamiat.
