Aino Mina Project Was Built Legally: Karzai

A day after a presidential decree on assessment of Aino Mina Township in Kandahar was leaked to media, founder of the township, Mahmoud Karzai, said the project has been build based on legal processes.

“It is not only Aino Mina; government has started assessing all the major projects. We are also a project in Kandahar. We hope that the issue will not be political,” Karzai told TOLOnews on Saturday.

The Attorney General’s Office on Saturday said a team is assessing the Aino Mina Township in Kandahar.

“Based on President’s (Ashraf Ghani) decree, a team has been assigned and one month ago the team was officially introduced to assess the issue,” the Attorney General’s Office spokesman Jamshid Rasooli said.

According to the decree, the Attorney General’s Office has been assigned to assess the township in collaboration with the National Directorate of Security, Ministry of Urban Development, the Independent Directorate of Local Governance and Afghanistan Independent Land Authority to review if the township has completed its legal and technical processes.

The decree has set a deadline of 45 days for the full review of the township.

The Aino Mina township has been built by former president Hamid Karzai’s brother Mahmoud Karzai.

The township is considered as a leading example of reconstruction and development in Afghanistan.

It has been constructed on 4,000 hectares of land and is home for more than 4,000 families.

Kandahar investors said they are concerned about the move  by government.

“People are worried because there are rumors that it is a political move and some people say theproject has been built on a grabbed land,” said a resident of Kandahar.

“People are concerned and it has affected their activities. If it is a political issue, then it is different,” a resident of Aino Mina Township said.
