All Schools Remain Closed In Warduj District Of Badakhshan

For the past two years, all schools in the Warduj district of Badakhshan have been closed due to terrorist activities in the area, local officials said on Wednesday.

The Badakhshan education department warned that until the district is not fully cleared of the insurgents, the more than 36 schools will remain closed. Warduj and Yamgan districts have been controlled by insurgents for almost seventeen months.

“According to the decision of the security council in Badakhshan, the schools in Warduj will not open until the district is fully cleared of insurgents. This is because spring is near and there is the possibility of renewed war,” said Abdul Razeq Tariq Badakhshan education department deputy.

The department said that in the coming educational year all schools will open in Yamgan district, but warned that until terrorists in the area are eliminated, schools in Warduj will not open. “We don’t have problems in Yamgan district and all schools will be opened in Yamgan for students to continue their lessons,” Tariq added.

Meanwhile the residents have said that more than 12,000 students are being deprived of education due to the closure of schools in Warduj district alone.

“In the past seventeen months, our children have been unable to receive an education. Most of them have joined Taliban ranks and some of them have fled to Pakistan or Iran,” said Abdul Rahman resident of Warduj district.

“We are facing cultural poverty in Warduj district. The government must clear Warduj of insurgents or reopen education,” said Saiful Rahman another resident. Meanwhile Badakhshan police have said that during the coming summer, Warduj district will be cleared of local and foreign insurgents.

“We accept that the closure of schools is causing great harm to our students, but we are committed to clearing Warduj of insurgents during the coming summer,” said Mohammad Nabi Bayan Badakhshan acting police chief.

Badakhshakn education department statistics show that in past two years nearly 20,000 students are deprived of education in both Warduj and Yamgan districts.
