ANSF Ends Taliban’s Siege In Takhar But Threat Lingers

The Afghan security forces on Wednesday managed to push back the Taliban who held a check post in Durqad district of northern Takhar province under siege for 72 hours, local officials said late Wednesday. 

According to officials, the Taliban attacked the Durqad check post 12 times from four directions in 48 hours -  but security forces were able to hold them off. 

Dr. Gulistan, head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Takhar said: “The enemies also attacked Durqad (district) and seized some parts of the district but our security forces came and drove them back.”

Officials said the insurgents had held Charsiha, a key check post in the area, under siege for 72 hours but after reinforcements arrived from around Takhar and Kunduz province, the insurgents were driven back from the area.

“Taliban has about 30 wounded and five of them were killed in the clash with us. One of their commanders of also among the dead,” said a soldier.

“The Taliban insurgents took control of our check posts but we managed to re-take our check posts and Taliban retreated from the area,” said another soldier.

Durqad is a virtual island along the border with Tajikistan.

However, local officials said the insurgents still pose a huge threat to the area especially as they are positioned only about one kilometer from the district center.
