Armed Attackers Storm RTA TV Station In Jalalabad

Armed assailants have stormed the compound of National Radio Television in Afghanistan (RTA) in Jalalabad in Nangarhar killing at least two people, the provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khogyani said.

According to him a number of people have also been wounded and taken to hospital.

He also stated that four attackers stormed the TV station's building. Two assailants have so far been killed amid heavy fighting, a third one has been captured but a fourth is still firing on security forces.

Reports indicate the attack started at about 10am on Wednesday morning.

An RTA employee told TOLOnews that at least 40 people work in the building daily. He said many have managed to escape but some were still trapped inside the building at about mid-day.

TOLOnews journalist Ziar Yaad, who is at the scene, said Afghan National Army troops are also now on the scene and have cordoned off the area.

However, according to eyewitnesses, when initial gunshots were heard, shop owners immediately closed their doors and people in the area fled the vicinity.

Ambulances could also be seen lining up, in the event of their being casualties.

Eyewitnesses also told Yaad that one attacker detonated explosives in order for the others to gain access into the building.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
