Atmar in London to Meet Pakistan’s Aziz Over Border Tensions

Haneef Atmar the National Security Advisor for President Ghani has arrived in London to attend at Afghanistan, Pakistani and UK Trilateral Security Conference which to be held on 15th March.

The officials will discuss the security of the region, especially in Afghanistan and will include deliberations on the recent tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.

Pakistani media also reported that Pakistan’s Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will meet to defuse tensions between the two countries over alleged terrorist sanctuaries.

The reports said that the meeting has been arranged by the UK, which is resuming its mediatory role in the complicated Pakistan-Afghanistan equation.

Both countries have accused each other of sheltering terrorists and the issue once again came to the fore after a suicide blast at the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar shrine in Sindh that killed 75 people.

Pakistan closed the border crossings with Afghanistan and demanded the handover of 76 wanted terrorists and sheltered terrorist hideouts on the Afghan side of the border.

In response, Afghanistan handed Pakistan the names of 85 leaders of Taliban, Haqqani Network and other terrorist groups and insisted that action be taken against 32 alleged terrorist training centers in Pakistan.

Afghanistan also warned that continued violence would compel it to seek international sanctions against “terrorist groups and their supporters”.
