Building A Fence Along Durand Line Is Foolish: Muslimyar

Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) speaker Fazl Hadi Muslimyar on Wednesday said in reaction to Islamabad's decision to build a fence along the Durand Line that Pakistan's decision was foolish and unilateral.

“This is foolish,” he said.

Muslimyar said instead of building a fence along the disputed border with Afghanistan, Pakistan should force terrorist commanders to leave their country and not provide them with safe havens.

“Pakistan should eliminate the house of the Taliban in Islamabad and their training centers in Peshawar,” he said.

Interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish meanwhile said Pakistan’s military efforts to build the fence is not acceptable and stressed this would not help in fighting terrorism.

According to Danish, Pakistan should target terrorist safe havens instead of fencing the border.

“Pakistan should concentrate on terrorist safe havens on Pakistan soil,” Najib Danish, spokesman for the interior ministry said.

Pakistan officials say that they built the fence to stop terrorists from crossing the border.

Gul Ahmad Madadzai, deputy head of Afghanistan’s Lawyers Union said “any kind of installation along the border needs both countries’ agreement and without a bilateral agreement, the neighboring country is not allowed to build facilities along the shared border."

Reports indicate that Pakistan started building the fence last Tuesday along the Durand Line.

Afghanistan border police reportedly number 20,000 soldiers while it is said Pakistan has deployed more than 150,000 soldiers along its border with Afghanistan.
