CEO Says All Citizens Have The Right To Be Politically Active

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said at a gathering on Wednesday that no government organization should be used as a political movement and that no state official has the right to threaten anyone.

The remarks come after the former head of the National Directorate of Security Rahmatullah Nabil claimed that he was warned by the incumbent chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Mohammad Masoum Stanikzai to limit his political activities.

He said every citizen has the right to continue their political activities and that threatening them was against the administration’s commitments.

“Government organizations should not be used to threaten political movements. And if a smallest sign of this happens, then it is against all the commitments that we have made to the people of Afghanistan and it must not be allowed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of UNESCO Afghanistan, Patricia McPhillips, said the people’s rights should be supported and government should make a bigger effort in this respect.

“It is critical that this law is promoted, creating public access and understanding. Without broad and inclusive public awareness from all sources, the government the media, civil society organizations and so far the full affect of such a law cannot be obtained. Towards this end, we are here today to celebrate the conclusion of a joint initiative by the oversight commission and UNESCO to increase public awareness of the access to information law,” she said.

The chairperson of the commission of access to information, Hawa Alam Nuristani, said there should be no limitation in the access to information for media outlets in the country.

“The law describes that which information should be given and which information should not be given. Therefore, this limitation for you (media) should not be imposed and if it happens, we will address these complaints in case we have a written evidence,” she said.

“Government has proven its will for being committed to support the access to information and freedom of speech,” President Ashraf Ghani’s spokesman Dawakhan Minapal said.
