Dostum Denies Siege On His House

The First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum on Tuesday night denied his residence in Kabul was under siege by security forces.

He told supporters the security forces had besieged the area because of a problem between police force members and Tarakhail tribe, who mostly live in eastern parts of Kabul.

He said the real reason behind the presence of security forces in the Sherpoor area in Kabul, where his house is located, is not known.

He said he has not talked to President Ashraf Ghani recently and that he rejected reports about a verbal clash with the president.

Dostum said a weak government will weaken the security forces' morale. He said the security forces must be supported and equipped well.

He warned that a tough war season faces the security forces in the coming year. Dostum said he is concerned about the presence Daesh in parts of the country.

He added that enemies were trying to create divisions among government leaders.

Dostum told his supporters the nation should be assured that he will not order his forces to act against Afghan security forces.

He called on government leaders to practice good governance, support the country and the people as well as keep 'real unity' among the nation.

This comes after the security forces were said to have besieged Dostum’s home.

A security source said earlier the armed forces surrounded his house on Tuesday because he had brought huge numbers armed personnel into the city.

In addition, the source said, nine of Dostum’s security guards were accused of mistreating Ahmad Eshchi, former deputy head of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan.

Only two of the guards showed a willingness to cooperate in the investigations. The remaining seven guards have not so far have not appeared to face questions.

A further reason for the security force action was that Dostum himself was asked to cooperate with the investigation into the Eshchi case. He, however, has thus far not complied with the request.

The source said Dostum went to his office with more guards than usual.

The seige on Dostum’s house started on Tuesday morning.
