Dozens Of Soldiers In Uruzgan Under Taliban Siege For Months

Dozens of the Afghan National Army personnel  have been under siege by the Taliban in parts of Uruzgan province for months and all routes to them are closed, a source told TOLOnews.

The source said the soldiers are trapped in three army bases in Pul-e-Chatoi area in Dehrauddistrict, in Shaheed Hassas area in Charchino district and in Mehr Abad area in Trinkot – Uruzgan’s capital city.

The areas are five kilometers from the office of the provincial governor, the source added.

However, the Ministry of Defense deputy spokesman Mohammad Radmanish said that a number of supply routes have been reopened following a series of military operations and convoys are now using the roads.

“We are supplying Dehraud [district] through Trinkot and at the same time there are a number of technical problems on the Shahwali Kot route which connects Kandahar with Trinkot. But now these issues have been solved,” Radmanish told TOLOnews on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a number of MPs criticized government for not paying attention to the problem.

“The security forces in Uruzgan have continued fighting despite them not having their wages paid on time and resources were not provided to them, but they continued defending the country; however, government has not paid the required attention to the security situation in Uruzgan,” said MP Raihana Azad.

“Around 1,500 U.S military troops went to the south [of Afghanistan]. This will boost the morale of the people. It will be appropriate if some of these forces are deployed in Uruzgan so that they can stay there for some time and cooperate in launching and planning military operations and help reopen the land routes,” former head of Uruzgan Provincial Council, Amanullah Hotak, said.

Reports indicate that of the total six districts in Uruzgan, only Gizab is under full control of Afghan security forces.
