EU to Investigate Weapons Sales To Taliban

European Union (EU) ambassador to Afghanistan, Franz-Michael Mellbin, on Tuesday told TOLOnews that selling weapons of the Afghan security forces to Taliban is a tragedy and donor countries will investigate the matter.

“Corruption is huge in the police force and it is a tragedy that the weapons and ammunition go from police to the enemies of the state. I had a discussion this morning with the Support Mission about this and on the international side there is no doubt that we find this to be a scandal which has to end. We are taking measures to stop this flow of corrupt practices which is hugely damaging for the nation,” Mellbin said.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) also said the ministry will investigate people who have been accused and arrested for selling security force weapons to anti-government groups.

“If anyone sells ammunition and weapons to enemies, which I don’t believe, we will arrest him and he will be brought to justice and jailed,” said Dawlat Waziri, spokesman of MoD.

In the past two years, reports have been released of the selling weapons to Taliban. On Sunday seven policemen were arrested by National Directorate of Baghlan security and accused of selling weapons and ammunition to Taliban.

The group was under command of the technical manager of Badghis police headquarter. They
are accused of selling tens of thousands of ammunitions and weapons to Taliban.

It also has been said that such deals also happened in Kunduz province, the province that has been fallen twice to Taliban in the recent two years.

“In Kunduz province and perhaps in most other places there are lots of weapon and ammunition sellers,” said Ghulam Rabbani Rabbani, member of Kunduz provincial council.

Kunduz officials however reject the claims.

“Kunduz local government has investigated deeply in this regard. No one member of Afghan security forces do not dare to sell weapons to enemies and they will not do that,” said Sayed Mahmood Danish, spokesman of Kunduz governor.
