Former Urban Development Officials Get Jail Terms For Graft

The Anti-Corruption Criminal Justice Center’s (ACJC) appeal court on Tuesday sentenced two former officials of the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs and Housing (MUDH) each to 20 years imprisonment and imposed an 86 million AFs fine after finding them guilty on charges of corruption and misuse of the authority.

The court also found a third person Mohammad Bakhtyar Nawaz, the former head of the housing enterprise department of the ministry guilty of corruption and sentenced him to seven years in prison and imposed a 440,000 AFs fine.

“This office had no legal base. The suspects had been operating on their own and were misusing their official posts,” said prosector Sultana Khak Nezhad.

The two sentenced to 20 years in prison each were Mohammad Qane and Sayed Amanullah Sadat who worked at the ministry during former president Hamid Karzai’s administration.

Qane had been the director of apartment affairs at Khawja Rawash township while Sadat served as head of the financial department of the concerned institution.

Meanwhile the ACJC’s prosecutor said the two officials sealed more than 20 illegal contracts with a number of construction companies.

The ACJC prosecutor said that there were no such posts occupied by these officials during their job.

But the criminals have said that their offices had been established by then minister of urban development affairs and housing.

“There are signatures of former ministers on the documents,” said Qane.

“This is not the final verdict, if you (suspects) have a reservation, you can file an appeal in the supreme court,” said judge Anisa Rasuli.

According to ACJC prosecutor, there are more former officials including the former minister of urban development affairs and housing suspected of corruption.
