Germany Urges Govt To Work Within The Law Over Noor Issue

In reaction to the political tensions that erupted this week between the Presidential Palace and Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor, Germany’s acting foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel said he wants the law to prevail in this respect.

During his trip to Kabul on Wednesday, Gabriel said that the Afghan government must deal with the issue on the basis of the law and that Berlin will strongly support such a move.

He also said that his country will use its influence to persuade Pakistan to stop supporting militant groups that are waging war against Afghanistan.

“We want the issue to be resolved in line with the law and Germany will help Afghanistan in this respect,” he said.

The German acting foreign minister said that his country is also willing to contribute to the peace process and help Afghanistan in its campaign against terrorism. He also voiced support to US President Donald Trump’s national security policy.

“Our diplomats are engaging in negotiations with the Pakistani officials and these talks will continue in the future to persuade this country stop supporting those groups which are creating problems in Afghanistan,” added Gabriel.

The comes a day after the German defense minister visited Mazar-e-Sharif where he pledged to increase the number of German troops in the country.

He also expressed hope that the elections in Afghanistan are held on time. He said that Germany will donate 8.5 million euros to Afghanistan’s elections.

Meanwhile, NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg has said that NATO will increase the number of its troops to Afghanistan to 16,000.

“In Afghanistan we have transitioned from combat operations to training and advising of local Afghan forces, but we are now increasing the number of troops serving in our training mission to 16,000 NATO soldiers in the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. NATO is also a full part of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, or Daesh,” said Stoltenberg.
