Ghani Suspends Herat Mayor Over Residents’ Complaints

President Ashraf Ghani has suspended Herat Mayor Farhad Niyayesh from his duty over complaints lodged by Herat residents against the mayor, said Munira Yusufzada, a spokesperson for the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).

Yusufzada said in a statement on Sunday that the mayor would return to his job after an investigation over two years of his activities is completed.

The investigation is being launched by a fact-finding team assigned by the IDLG.

The IDLG has not provided more details about the investigation.

In February,  President Ghani dismissed at least seven border police officials in Herat province including Herat’s Border Police Chief, a military commissioner of the border police in Islam Qala as well as the manager of the passport department and three other police force members.
