Ghazni’s District Governor Killed in Taliban Attack

Ali Shams Dost the district governor of Khwaja Omari district of eastern Ghazni province was killed along with seven policemen in a Taliban attack early Thursday, provincial police confirmed in a statement.

In addition, nine other security forces were wounded.

The incident happened at about 2:00am local time after Taliban insurgents attacked the district governor’s compound and police check posts, the statement read. 

“Ali Shams Dost was killed with seven other policemen during the clashes and some parts of the district governor’s compound was also torched,” it said.

“After the attack the forces called for air support and 27 Taliban were killed during the airstrikes and clashes,” it added.

However, the statement did not provide further details.

The Taliban said they have captured the district, a claim that was rejected by local police officials.
