Hekmatyar ‘Supports The System’, Urges Nation To Do The Same

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said on Thursday that he will not let anyone bring down the system nor would he agree to such a move.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Hekmatyar said those who want to change the system must ask themselves what the alternative is and whether they are able to run the country.

He said a public demonstration was within every Afghan’s rights but that any move to close roads or to overrun the Presidential Palace, especially by armed protestors, was not acceptable.

This comes after hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of downtown Kabul on Friday in a bid to march on the Presidential Palace. They had been protesting against Wednesday’s massive truck bomb in the city that killed over 150 people.

Hekmatyar said that “no one can take power by force. Every Afghan has the right to make demands but not to close roads.”

He stated that Hizb-e-Islami accepts the system as it is and encouraged the nation to do the same.

He went on to say the enemies of the country are against peace and even against the peace agreement with Hizb-e-Islami and the government Afghanistan.

On the issue of parliamentary elections, he said he hopes this goes ahead soon and that it is held transparently and within budget. He did say however that reforms should be brought.

He said Hizb-e-Islami would participate in the next parliamentary elections but in terms of taking part in the presidential elections no decision had yet been made.

He said if Hizb-e-Islami does nominate a candidate for presidential elections they would prefer to have a candidate that is accepted by all the people.

Commenting on the ongoing war he said the reason is that people want to take power by force.

He said "our neighbors must not support the war in Afghanistan and must fight terrorism".

Hekmatyar says some circles have started a campaign against them but he has asked his supporters not to take action against them.

Despite having spoken out against the media in the past, on Thursday he said the media was like a mirror and was the voice of the people. “The media is a necessity and must be impartial, and report the truth,” he said.
