Kandahar Youth Council Backs New US War Strategy

The Kandahar Youth Council on Thursday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s new war strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia and said they were in full support of the move.

They said Trump’s move was in the interests of Afghanistan and the region.

The council also urged the Afghan government to consider the expansion of the role of the youth in the decision making process.

The remarks were made during a special gathering in Kabul.

Youth delegations from Zabul, Helmand and Uruzgan provinces also joined the council and announced support for the new strategy.

“The US as a trusted and strategic partner provides the legal and political balance in the region and the world and takes part as a powerful partner to create balance in regional politics,” said Jawed Faisal, a member of Kandahar's youth council.

“The Afghans must analyze their good and bad neighbors to know them better and support the government,” said another member of Kandahar youth council Toofan Waziri.

Gul Agha, 22, from war-torn Uruzgan province was one member who voiced his support and said Afghans hope that the new war strategy will help eliminate terrorists and their safe havens so that all Afghans can live in peace after decades of war and violence.

“I pray that Allah brings us security so that we can live a peaceful life,” said Gul Agha.

High-ranking government officials including Gul Agha Sherzai, the acting minister of borders and tribal affairs, also attended the gathering where they once again called on militants to lay down their arms and join the peace process.

“From this stage I call on the Taliban to bring peace in the country after this and stop the bloodshed," said Sherzai.

Council members also called for the mobilization of youths around the country to help resolve the  turmoil.

They said that the youth should work for the development of the country regardless of their ethnicity.

Youths constitute half of the Afghan population.

On August 21, Trump put forward a long-awaited strategy for resolving the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan, pledging to concentrate on eliminating terrorists in the country – opposed to nation-building.
