Key Al-Qaeda Commander Killed In NDS Special Operation

A key al-Qaeda commander, Saifullah Akthar, and one of his fighters were killed in a special operation carried out by the National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives in Nawa district of central Ghazni province on January 9, the NDS confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

The statement said Akhtar was a key al-Qaeda commander who leaded Pakistani fighters during the Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan.

He had gathered 30,000 fighters in Afghanistan in order to fight in Central Asia, the statement added.

“At that time, he [Saifullah Akhtar] and the incumbent al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, had the responsibility of a terrorist hub in Bagram and Reshkhor regions of Kabul,” the statement said.

“He was arrested two times in Pakistan but he was released by a special circle of that country [Pakistan] and was sent back to Afghanistan for war,” the NDS said in the statement.
