Lawmakers Divided Over Noor’s 'Resignation'

Some members of Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) on Wednesday accused Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor of rebellion after he refused to step down from his post.

The lawmakers called on government to deal with him as an armed opponent.

“The government should deal with him (Atta Mohammad Noor) such as Daesh and Taliban,” said one MP Arian Youn.

“Thank you Mr. President! Today you got rid of an oppressor,” said another MP Qudratullah Zaki.

“Noor says that if he remains in power for fifteen years, there will be justice, if not, justice will not prevail,” said MP Sairah Sharifi.

But, other lawmakers came out in support of Noor and said his dismissal was a plot to pave the way for the infiltration of Daesh militants in the northern parts of Afghanistan.

“The champion of one ethnic group in this country is the enemy of another ethnic group; if an ethnic group has got someone and he defends his ethnicity, then others create conspiracies against him,” said MP Abdul Rauf Enaami.

“Atta had resigned two or three months ago, but why now are you asking him for political resignation,” said MP Lalai Hamidzai.

“The project for the removal of personalities has reached its peak in the National Unity Government, if someone has a national reputation and platform, then plots are fabricated against them even if he is the first vice president, Bi Bi Gul (first lady Rula Ghani) should decide about him,” said MP Sadiqi Neelizada.

However, the majority of lawmakers remained split over the resignation of Noor. But some others called on government leaders to show restraint.

“I want to recommend from the address of Eqtedar-e-Milli party to the Afghan government and Jamiat-e-Islami to show restraint,” said MP
Sayed Ali Kazimi.

Noor and his party Jamiat-e-Islami described the move by government as irresponsible and hasty.

The Presidential Palace issued a statement on Monday informing the nation that Noor's resignation had been accepted.

Some MPs have called on government to deal with the Balkh governor in the same way they would deal with an armed insurgent group.
