NAI Says Freedom Of Speech Has Deteriorated Under NUG

The organization supporting open media in Afghanistan, NAI, on Monday said their findings on freedom of speech indicates the situation has deteriorated in the past three years.

According to NAI, violence against journalists, censorship, short-term detention, media outlet closures, limitation to access to information and journalists fleeing the country have all contributed to the problem.

According to NAI, their records show a marked increase in violence against journalists during the National Unity Government’s tenure, compared to that during the previous administration.

“During the NUG’s term, violence against journalists has increased four-fold. During Hamid Karzai’s 13 years, 610 cases of violence were recorded in this period but in the past three years, already 620 cases have been recorded,” said Mujib Khelwatgar, NAI executive director.

The presidential palace meanwhile downplayed the report and said the statistics were not reliable. ARG said according to Reporters Without Borders, Afghanistan was one of the better countries in terms of responding to the media.
