Members of Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan party on Thursday called on the National Unity Government (NUG) to fire all the electoral commission members.

Party members said at a meeting in Kabul, that was attended by the Cooperation and Coordination Council of Political Parties (CCPP), that no fundamental reforms have been made in the election bodies and government does not have the political will to hold the upcoming elections.

“Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan is worried about the insecurity and about the percentage of territory that is under Taliban control. It seems that government and some people are going to manage the elections for their own interests. Also the commissions failure shows that government does not have the will to hold elections,” said a member of Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan, Nematullah Nemat.

Members of the party said if government does not implement their demands, they will introduce the outline they have prepared in consultation with political parties on bringing reforms in the electoral bodies and also on addressing political challenges in the country.

“If government does not accept our demand and if it simply ignores it, then we in cooperation with the political parties will introduce our technical outline. And if it is ignored, the third step will be to deliver (our plan) for the future of Afghanistan,” another member of Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan Sheway Sharq said.

Participants at Thursday meeting said they will not accept any excuse over a possible delay in holding the upcoming elections.

“If the commissions hold the elections, it will not be legitimate. Also the leadership of the government should be fired,” Barna Salehi said.

The institutions overseeing the election process meanwhile urged the political parties to cooperate with government in holding the next elections.

“Continuation of such disagreements will make the situation worse in the electoral bodies and the political parties should cooperate with the commissions to overcome the problem,” Yusuf Rasheed, executive director of Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan said.

The National Unity Government (NUG) however said they are committed to holding the elections as scheduled in July next year.

Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan party and also election watchdog organizations believe that the leaders of the electoral commissions are poor managers and that they do not have the ability to hold transparent elections.

Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan party members said government needs to take their request seriously and urged the NUG to not ignore them.
