Gulajan Abdulbadi Sayyad has been elected as the head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in a poll on Wednesday that was carried out by the seven member commission, a source told TOLOnews. 

Sayyad was previously the spokesman for the IEC. 

According to the source, Wasima Badghisi has been appointed as the operational deputy of the commission and Maazullah Dawlati as the financial and administrative deputy of the IEC. 

The former head of the election commission, Najibullah Ahmadzai, was sacked by President Ashraf Ghani in November. 

The commission was one member short until January 13, when Hafizullah Hashemi was appointed as a new member of the IEC. 

The commission is preparing for the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections this year.
