Sayyaf Stresses The Need For Transparent Elections

Head of the Council for Protection and Stability in Afghanistan (CPSA) and a former jihadi leader Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf at a ceremony at his residence on Friday said the National Unity Government has no option to stay in power, except holding a transparent election.

Sayyaf pointed out to Kandahar political meeting, saying that politicians will not make any decision against the national interests.

“We also want that any decision they (politicians) will take and any move they want to make and anything they say, they should prefer the national interests than anything else,” said Sayyaf.

He said the Constitutional Loya Jirga, the Grand Assembly, should be held.

“(Government) should provide the context for holding the Constitutional Loya Jirga where people’s representatives and the elders will come together and talk and make decisions about Afghanistan's future,” Sayyaf added.

“Government should honestly provide the opportunity for holding a transparent election. Because an unfair election will be bad than no election,” said Sayyaf.

This comes after the Independent Election Commission said it is ready to hold the upcoming parliamentary elections on its scheduled time.

“The Independent Election Commission is ready from administrative and technical perspectives to hold the elections on the scheduled time (next year in July),” Abdulbadi Sayyad, spokesman for the commission, told TOLOnews on Thursday.
