Structure Of The NUG Will Not Change: CEO’s Office

In reaction to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s remarks on the National Unity Government’s (NUG) structure, the CEO’s office said government’s structure and its goals will not change.

Speaking to a group of his supporters on Sunday, Hekmatyar criticized government and said it was like a car with two drivers.

“In Afghanistan we have freedom of expression and everyone is allowed to speak out. But about the NUG structure and its future plans, there is clarity and nothing will change in this regard,” CEO Deputy Spokesman, Jawid Faisal said.

A few hours earlier the CEO, Abdullah Abdullah, said at the Council of Ministers Meeting that Hekmatyar’s move to return to Afghanistan would have a positive impact.

“Hekmatyar’s return to Afghanistan and by joining the peace process is a positive move. We hope that other groups who are involved in fighting will end their war and violence, join the peace process and take part in maintaining peace in the country,” said Abdullah.

Hekmatyar on Sunday voiced displeasure at the dispute between the NUG leaders and said if they cannot resolve their disagreements, one of them should step down.

“Let’s (NUG leaders) take a historic and brave action. One of you must step down in favor of the other,” Hekmatyar said.

Hekmatyar’s recent remarks were met by mixed reaction among parliament members.

“He grew up in this county and we welcome him,” said Agha Jan Saiedi, an MP.

“In the past years he always has been in a violent environment and that aggression and violence can be felt in his voice,” said Nadir Shah Bahr, an MP.

Hekmatyar signed a peace agreement last year with the NUG, after having refused to do so for many years.

Analyst meanwhile said Hekmatyar’s shift in opinion can create optimism in the country that he will also work towards maintaining peace.
