Taliban Kill 26 Soldiers at Kandahar Base As Fighting Continues

Taliban fighters have killed at least 26 soldiers in an attack on an army base in the restive province of Kandahar, once a key Taliban stronghold in the south.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) has confirmed that 26 soldiers were killed in the attack and 13 others were wounded.

“There was a tough battle going on, our soldiers bravely fought and defended the base but unfortunately there was huge pressure from the enemy's side, 26 of our personnel were martyred, 13 people were wounded, we confirm this, but our forces are still present at the base,” said defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri.

“The commander of the army corps is responsible in this respect, he does not have good leadership and command capacity,” said a member of Kandahar provincial council Attaullah Atta.

In addition, eight other soldiers are missing.

The attack took place in Khakriz district of the province late Tuesday after Taliban insurgents attacked the army base, according to sources.

“82 soldiers were at the base when the Taliban attacked. The remaining soldiers were not hurt in the attack,” a source said.

Earlier, a source told TOLOnews that 40 soldiers were wounded in the attack. However these sources have since revised the death toll.

A source has said that the battle continued for six hours.

“It was a coordinated attack, 26 soldiers were killed, 30 others wounded, 8 soldiers are missing and seventeen others were not hurt,” the source said.

“Within few days you will see tangible progress on issues such as clearance and checking and the stringent implementation of the war strategy which we have on the site,” said general Amanullah Mobi, the commander of 209 Shaheen Army Corps.

But, in the northern part of the country, the Afghan commando forces managed to recapture the center of Kohistan district of Faryab province.

Today’s attack in Kandahar marks the sixth attacks on the Afghan forces in the restive province where the Taliban hold vast swathes of land.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
