Trump Meets Ghani In New York, Discusses Anti-Terror Fight

At a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ghani and Trump discussed a number of issues including the war on terrorism.

US President Donald Trump met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on the sidelines of the 72nd session of UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues including the war on terrorism, Afghanistan’s security and the progress made by the Afghan and US forces in the campaign against terrorism.

The US leader offered a warm welcome to the Afghan delegation and reiterated that militaries from the two allies were working hard in the war on terror.

“It is a pleasure to have president Ghani of Afghanistan with us, we are working very well together, we are working very hard, our military is as you know over there right now doing an incredible job; more of leadership than fighting; leading a lot of wonderful Afghan troops who are fighting very hard; we were just discussing that and great progress has been made; so it’s an honor to have your representatives with us,” said Trump.

This comes just weeks after Trump outlined his new war strategy for Afghanistan, a move which was widely welcomed by the government in Kabul.

Under the new strategy, the US has committed to sending in more troops to Afghanistan in order to fight insurgency.

Ghani also touched on the US war strategy on Afghanistan and said that the new strategy will help Afghanistan in its struggle for peace.

"First of all I would like to pay tribute to American soldiers, officers and civilians particularly those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. That sacrifice can now result in a stable Afghanistan, I want to thank you on behalf of the people of Afghanistan, the government of Afghanistan for making a decision, that is historic, you (Trump) asked very fundamental questions, you made this decision on the basis  of courage and determination, we salute your courage,” said Ghani.

According to Ghani there has been immense changes on the ground since the announcement of the new strategy.

“I have been to six our seven army corps and they all greet you, and the people of the United States and the American soldiers and officers who fought shoulder to shoulder with…it is a difference of day and night. The cloud of uncertainty has been lifted, but equally important you commitment to a political solution at the end of the process,” said Ghani.

Ghani said that the US forces would not be in a combat role and that the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) would take on the responsibilities of this.

“What we want to assure the American people is that there is not going to be a combat role you have made that crystal clear and we are committed to making sure that it is the Afghan people, the Afghan soldiers, the Afghan officers who will take the burden of responsibility," said Ghani.

Ghani pledged that his administration will not ask the US for blank checks and that there will be full accountability and transparency of aid.

“Mr. president we fully understand and endorse the concept you use, we do not ask for a blank check, we are determined to do what is our duty to fight corruption, ensure that there is no waste of resources,” he said.

“People realize there are twenty terrorist groups in Afghanistan, this is where the World Trade Center, people, I call them people were trained, this is what happened, there are twenty groups more than anywhere else, we are hitting them very very hard and very very effectively,” Trump said.
