Two Security Incidents Noted On First Day Of Eid

Two security incidents were recorded on Sunday, the first day of Eid-al-Fitr, which included a deadly Taliban attack on a check post near Salma Dam in Herat and a suicide bombing in Nangarhar.

In the first incident, 10 security members were killed in Herat when Taliban stormed their check post about 13kms from the dam.

The second incident happened when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives before reaching his target in Ghani Khel district of Nangarhar. Only the suicide bomber was killed in the incident. No other casualties were reported.

The interior ministry meanwhile said strong security measures are in place to ensure security during Eid.

“We are ready in every part of Afghanistan to defend the country; to fight against terrorists and enemies of the Afghan people,” said interior minister, Taj Mohammad Jahid.

Security officials around the country confirmed this and said they all have plans in place to thwart attacks.

“We have tried to foil the enemy’s plans. We carried out many operations during the night and had good achievements,” said Gada Mohamamd Dost, a senior military officer in Zabul province.

“I call on insurgents to join the peace process and stop killing Afghans,” said Attaullah Haq Bayan, head of Zabul provincial council.

“They (insurgents) along with other people should participate in Eid ceremonies,” said Murtaza, a resident of Zabul province.

A number of Kabul residents meanwhile welcomed the move to tighten security around the country and said after peaceful Eid prayer ceremonies on Sunday morning that armed anti-government groups must join the peace process and end the war.

This past month of Ramadan has turned out to be the deadliest for Afghanistan in 15 years. In this time, over 1,000 people were killed and wounded.
