UK to Increase Its Role in Afghanistan After Brexit: Envoy

British ambassador to Afghanistan Dominic Jeremey has said that the withdrawal of Britain from the European Union (EU), known as Brexit, will help London increase its role in various sectors in Afghanistan and other countries.

The statement comes only hours after UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced that Britain is officially leaving the EU.

“I am absolutely certain that as I look at our relationship with Afghanistan, our support for Afghanistan will be unwavering , we will continue our enormously strong commitment to Afghanistan, because Afghanistan and the UK effort  in support of the people of Afghanistan is exactly the kind of thing that we want to be doing as a truly independent,” he said.

What analysts say about Brexit?

“The presence of the UK in the European Union had positive impacts on the cooperation of the EU countries toward Afghanistan and they had more effectiveness,” said political analyst Jaffar Mahdawi.

However, some countries have raised concerns about Brexit, but UK envoy to Kabul believes that Brexit will lead to more engagement of his country in issues in Afghanistan and other countries.

UK will take two years to complete Brexit.

What is Brexit?

Brexit is a word that has become used as a shorthand way of saying the UK leaving the EU - merging the words Britain and exit to get Brexit, in a same way as a possible Greek exit from the euro was dubbed Grexit in the past.

A referendum - a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part - was held on Thursday 23 June, 2016, to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union. Leave won by 51.9% to 48.1%. The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting.
