U.S Considering ‘Major Changes’ To Afghan War Strategy

The government of the United States is reportedly considering ‘major changes’ in its war strategy in Afghanistan – which includes the deployment of an additional 5,000 American soldiers.

According to the information leaked to media about the strategy, more power will be given to American forces in order to widen their air raids on Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan.

“Instead of sending foreign troops, the money which is allocated for this purpose can further equip and support the security forces of the country and it will also help the security forces to move towards self-reliance,” said military expert Atiqullah Amarkhail.

Talks on the new U.S war strategy in Afghanistan gather fresh momentums at a time that according to Afghan officials, elimination of insurgents’ hideouts and training camps beyond Afghan borders will have constructive impacts on peace and security of the country.

“This [the change in U.S war strategy] will not prove constructive unless sanctions are not slapped on the state sponsors of terrorism and unless the United Nations puts pressure on them [state sponsors of terrorism],” said MP Nazifa Zaki.

The United States National Security Advisor, H.R McMaster, visited Afghanistan two weeks ago where he held talks with Afghan officials and U.S commanders on the new strategy.

U.S officials have said that the U.S military has wrapped up sketching the new plan and it will be put for final approval on U.S President Donald Trump’s desk within a week time.

The Afghan government has welcomed the U.S move to consider major changes in the new strategy.

“Why the previous combat was not successful? It means that pressure should mount on the terrorists’ safe havens in order to make the fight effective,” deputy presidential spokesman Dawa Khan Minapal said.

Military analysts said the combat role by the US military will help local forces in their campaign against insurgency.

However analysts have been rallying for better leadership of the war by the Afghan security institutions to win over the enemy.

Analysts also stressed the need for the security institutions to combat corruption and address the needs of the soldiers on the battlefields.
