Wardak Police Chief Accuses Local Official Of Having Taliban Ties

Maidan Wardak police chief general Faheem Qaeem on Wednesday accused Akhtar Mohammad Tahiri, head of Maidan Wardak provincial council, of having ties with Taliban insurgents.

He said that Tahiri allegedly attempted to obstruct the implementation of key development projects such as the 500kw electricity project.

But, Tahiri has said that he will respond to the allegations on Thursday in Kabul.

Ties with the Taliban, obstructing development projects and other illicit actions are among key allegations leveled against him by the police chief.

“Akhtar Mohammad Tahiri was also involved in the kidnapping of an Indian engineer, he also tries to collect illegal money from the people in the name of the head of the provincial council,” said Qaeem.

But in response, Tahiri said: “He (police chief) then should come to the hall of the ministry of information and culture and prove his allegations and our involvement in insecurity, we will also expose him to you.”

Local officials in the province have made similar accusations against each other in Maidan Wardak in the past. Analysts say that government must come up with comprehensive security measures to address the challenges in the province.

“Unfortunately the necessary documents and other related papers which needed to be shared with people were not revealed due to certain reasons, but we cannot reject that many have ties with the armed opponents and the Taliban,” said political analyst  Barna Salehi.

Over the past few months Maidan Wardak police chief has lodged complaints against what he calls the violation of security plans. But questions have been raised over whether these claims are genuine.
