Zabul Schools Under Threat from Militants

Residents of south-western Zabul province said Sunday that they are concerned about multiple schools closing because of insecurity and the threat of insurgents.

Zabul's Shamelzai district, in the south-east of the province, has been particularly hard hit by the country's instability with residents claiming all its schools have been forced shut.

Shamulzai district governor Barat Khan confirmed the local residents claims but added that the provincial governor says their problems will be addressed.

"The district shares a joint border with Pakistan and it has come under the pressure of the enemies. Insurgency and insecurity are the causes of the schools being shut but their problems will be tackled soon," Barat Kahn said Sunday.

Some residents told TOLOnews that the continuation of such a disaster will create serious problems for the central government and suggested that they would flee to Pakistan if the problem persists.

Residents also said they had conveyed the problem to the Ministry of Education, but the officials have not taken the necessary steps to solve their problems.

"Shamulzai is one of the districts where which we wanted to open the schools, but unfortunately due to different issues we have failed but hopefully 24 schools will be opened by next year," Provincial Education Director Rahimullah Lodin said.
