25 Couples Wed in Balkh in Mass Wedding

A total of 25 couples celebrated their marriage in a mass wedding in the northern Balkh province on Sunday.

Syed Hussain is one of those who got married in the mass ceremony, costing far less than a single wedding would have. Hussain was not able to get married for several years due to poverty and economic issues. But in an initiative, the Balkh youth affairs department funded the marriage of the 25 couples.

“I was engaged for three years, I was unable to celebrate it due to the high cost of the ceremony. I was facing a lot of financial problems at home,” said Hussain.

“We are happy with our lives, I want to complete the challenges ahead with my husband,” said Hussain’s bride Rabia.

“With the help of this initiative we want to strengthen the culture of mass weddings and persuade the charity organizations and the business community to contribute in the initiative,” said Azimulhaq Azimi, head of Balkh youth affairs department

Each couple was paid 35,000 Afs in cash to buy their home necessities.
