Afghan Singer Cancels Concert in Herat After Mullahs Protest

Shafiq Mureed, one of Afghanistan's prominent young singers, has cancelled his Eid concert in western Herat province after mullahs labelled it immoral, Murid told TOLOnews on Tuesday.

The concert was due to be held on Tuesday in ًwestern Herat province to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. His songs included tributes to mothers, children, and patriotic songs -- the reason for the concert, as Mureed stated, was to consider Islamic and traditional values.

However, some local mullahs called on the Herati residents not to participate in the concert because such events promoted immorality.

"I came to Herat to present a music concert named ‘One Laughter'. It was cancelled due to the mullahs' opposition and I kept quiet in order to avoid chaos and creating more problems," Mureed told TOLOnews, adding that he felt very sorry about the cancellation for the residents of western Herat province.

Mureed's fans criticised the government officials for allowing the concert to be cancelled and the move was widely condemned through Facebook and other social media sites.

Shafiq Mureed is one of the leading and most popular Afghan young singer who sings in both national languages, Pashto and Dari, composing his own songs and poems.

This comes despite national Afghan TV channels telecasting Indian, Turkish and Western songs which are also considered immoral to some mullahs, and as going against the Islamic tradition and values.

Mureed was born in Kabul province while his parents hail from Laghman.
