Controversial ‘Padmavati’ Indian Film Cleared by Censor Board

India's film censor board has cleared the release of controversial Bollywood film, Padmavati.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told local media it had not recommended any cuts.

In November, India's top court rejected an appeal by a lawyer to block the film's global release.

Padmavati tells the story of a 14th Century Hindu queen belonging to the high Rajput caste and the Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji.

Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh play the lead roles.

Hindu groups and a Rajput caste organization allege that the movie, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, depicts an intimate romantic scene between the two characters; the producers of the film deny this.

Although a fictional character, Padmavati is deified and held as a symbol of female honor among Rajputs.

There has been uncertainty over the movie’s release for the past few months, but the CBFC, following an examining committee meeting, has assured a U/A certificate will be given to the movie after the necessary modifications.
