Record 92 Foreign-Language Films Picked For 2018 Oscars

A record 92 countries submitted entries in the Foreign-Language Film race at the 2018 Oscars, Gold Derby media reported.

According to them this is seven more from last year which had broken the benchmark of 83 set in 2015. The nations represented ranged from A (Afghanistan) to V (Vietnam), Gold Derby reported.

The six first-time contenders include Haiti, Honduras, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mozambique, Senegal and Syria.

Among the contenders are two Cannes Film Festival winners: the Swedish film “The Square,” which claimed the top prize of the Palme d’Or and Germany’s “In the Fade,” which earned Diane Kruger the Best Actress award. And Angelina Jolie‘s “First They Killed My Father,” qualified as the Cambodian entry after the academy ruled in favor of its eligibility based on her holding dual citizenship with that country.

Afghanistan’s entry is Roya Sadat’s “A Letter to the President”.
