The conference apparently was discussing about ways to fight terrorism and it will be held from time to time.
Some officials participated in the conference whose countries have been declared as the the terrorist sanctuaries or have neglected in fight against terrorism.
Are these countries honest in counterterrorism?
While, the anti American ideology was clearly felt in the conference and most of the participants had tense ties with the United States, can we name this an anti-terrorism conference?
Presence of Accused Officials in the Counter Terrorism Conference
Fight against terrorism needs solid and honest action, but officials, most of them accused of having relationships with terrorists or taking the fight against terrorism easy had participated in the conference.
Sudanese president who is accused of war crimes by ICC is currently under international prosecution.
Pakistan is known as the main sanctuary of the extremists and terrorists. The insurgency in Afghanistan is currently led by Pakistan and death of Osama Bin Laden in the garrison city of Abbotabad revealed the double face of Pakistan to the world.
With such a structure, what can we expect from this conference?
Iran's Fears over US Presence in Afghanistan
The expansion of the insurgency and terrorism in our country and the region has many factors. But the US military bases in Afghanistan were the sideline of the discussions in the country. Afghanistan has repeatedly emphasised that presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan will be a threat to the region and neighbours. The main point is that Afghanistan has not been able to convince the neighbouring countries and sometimes has taken their side like president Ahmadinejad in his trip to Kabul called the foreign troops as invaders.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Defence Minister told journalists after his trip to Kabul that Afghan people are against existence of US military bases in Afghanistan and certainly the Afghan government will follow the people. The issue was discussed in a meeting between president Karzai and the Iranian religious leader.
Changing sides from West to East
The International Antiterrorism Conference was held at a time when the US relationships with some participating countries including Afghanistan have deteriorated. So, it seems that the conference was more confronting the United States rather than discussing terrorism related issues.
End of the Conference, Start of Pakistan's Artillery Attack on Afghanistan
While the conference was getting to its end, Pakistan army started artillery attacks on Afghanistan's eastern border areas. According to local officials, some areas of Nangarhar and Kunar provinces came under severe artillery attacks from Pakistan. Reports say that hundreds of rockets have been fired into Afghan soil. While the Afghan Border Police confirmed that only Pakistan army has access to the artillery, but it seems that the Afghan government wants its Pakistani friends to be happy and therefore it doesn't react.
Meanwhile, the recent statement from the commander of eastern border police General Aminullah Amarkhil has drawn ire of the Afghan government. At the same time General Amarkhil has resigned.
Relying on the Neighbours
Because of its geographical importance, Afghanistan has been invaded throughout the history and carelessness of our government officials cause instability in the country. Currently, Afghanistan is a contest ground for the regional and global powers and the real victims are the innocent Afghan people.
Balance between these powers and a working policy will be effective to change the current situation in the country but lack of a working police drowns the country into the conflicts. Meanwhile, there are some movements by our government officials which clearly show their change of side.
But what will be the cost of this change? Which way the country will be led to? Will we become a toy for our neighbouring countries?
