At least two Italian soldiers were killed in a mine explosion in Enjeel district of the western Herat province on Wednesday night

These soldiers were killed at 9pm on Wednesday in Enjeel district after Afghan and coalition forces defused two mines, but the third exploded, a police officer told TOLOnews on condition of anonymity.

The killed soldiers are Italian citizens, he added.

Italian authorities have said nothing about the incident so far.

Italy has around 3,300 soldiers in Afghanistan, all of them deployed in the western Herat province.

According to the iCasualties.org website that tracks the death of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, a total of 26 Italian soldiers have been killed in the Afghan war since 2001.
