At least 8 insurgents were killed and 12 others were wounded in an operation conducted by Afghan forces in southern Helmand province on Saturday, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The forces seized many weapons during the operation and also arrested five other insurgents, it said.

The Ministry of Defence did not make it clear whether there were any Afghan casualties in the assault.

Afghan and Nato forces are conducting military operations around the country to clear it from militants. In the second phase of transition, due to start soon, Afghan troops will take responsibility for providing security in all or some of 17 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.
