News - Afghanistan

Gunmen in Afghan police uniforms opened fire on Nato troops in southern Afghanistan on Monday, killing a soldier, Isaf said.

"An individual wearing the uniform of the Afghan Uniformed Police turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing one service member," Isaf said in a statement.

Isaf did not provide more details about the incident.

Last month, an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French troops and wounded 16 others in eastern Kapisa province on a base.

After the attack, France suspended its training programme and threatened to withdraw its forces a year ahead Nato's schedule.

Meanwhile, the Albanian defence ministry on Monday confirmed that two of its soldiers were shot and killed while on duty in southern Kandahar province.

The Albanians' deaths are the first since the country started its Afghan mission. Albania has a contingents of 120 soldiers in the country.

"They were shot by men dressed in Afghan police uniform using five automatic weapons and a light machine gun," the defence ministry said.

Also on Monday, three Italian soldiers were killed in a vehicle during an operation in western Afghanistan, Isaf said.

The death brings the number of foreign troops who have died this year in Afghanistan to 50, according to icasualties.org, a website that keeps a tally of foreign soldiers' deaths in the country.
