As many as 12 insurgents have been detained in Afghanistan, according to local officials who spoke to TOLOnews on Sunday.

In a military offensive launched by Afghan National Security Forces in the Kuzare Payen village of Jabal Saraj district, seven Taliban insurgents were detained Saturday night, provincial spokesman Roshna Khalid told TOLOnews.

An Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) soldier was killed and another was injured. Taliban fighters were also killed and wounded but the bodies were taken from the scene, Khalid added.

In a separate incident a prominent Taliban commander, Mawlawi Ghafar, was detained alongside three others by local NDS officials in Kandahar on Saturday.

Mullah Sharifullah, who was responsible for attacks in the Maiwand district in Kandahar, was detained also in Kandahar city.

Kandahar has been one of the most challenging and dangeorus provinces for Afghan and foreign forces alike in southern Afghanistan since 2001.
