For the first time, an Iranian representative takes part in a meeting held in Rome to discuss achievements in Afghanistan and Pakistan on Monday
The Iranian delegate, Mohammad Ali Qanezadeh, during his visit also participated in a briefing by the top US military commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus on security transition strategy to the Afghan forces.
The US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke has said that "this is the first time the Iranians attended this meeting," New York Times reports.
Mr Qanezadeh is a high ranking Iranian diplomat who is holding an important position in Iran's foreign ministry.
Iran has consistently questioned the military presence of international community in the region particularly in Afghanistan and has frequently criticised the US strategy on the war against terror.
