News - Afghanistan

At least two people have been killed and five wounded in an attempted suicide attack by two men near a US base in Kabul on Wednesday morning, local officials said.

The incident took place about 8:20 AM local time when two men with suicide bomb vests were shot and killed by Afghan security forces near a US base in Street 14 of the Wazir Akbar Khan district.

Two security guards were killed in the blast when part of one of the suicide vests exploded during the shooting, according to Kabul police chief Gen. Ayub Salangi.

"Two men who was wearing vests were shot and killed by security forces before he could detonate the bomb vest himself. A part of one of the vests exploded with the impact of the shooting, killing two private security guards," he said.

Five civilians were wounded in the blast, including two employees of the Afghan Ministry of Defense who were in a vehicle nearby at the time, Salangi said.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed the incident in a statement and said that two suicide bombers have been shot dead by Afghan security forces before reaching their target.

"Two bombers have been shot dead by security forces before entering a foreign military camp in Street 14 of Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan in Kabul about 08:00 AM today morning. During the shooting, their explosives detonated," it said.

The neighborhood is home to many high-ranking Afghan officials such as the Chief Justice of the Afghan Supreme Court, as well as international organisations and the US base Camp Eggers.

However, the Kabul police chief said earlier that the target was not clear.

He said that the bomber also carried with him gun and grenade.

The chief of the Kabul police criminal investigation department Gen. Mohammad Zahir has said that the attacker was on foot and was identified by security forces before he could detonate his suicide vest.

Meanwhile, the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid has claimed responsibility for the attack and said that the target was the US intelligence agency's CIA office.

The attack comes just a few days ahead of the Islamic holy day of Ashura during which Muslims commemorate the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.
