Nearly, 25 people were killed on Monday after Nato forces targeted a mosque in an air raid, provincial security officials said.

Dead bodies are still under the rubble and efforts are underway to dig them out, officials said.

The incident has taken place in Baghran, the northern district in Helmand, about 160 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah.

It is believed that the Taliban insurgents had gathered in the area to plan their activities targeting Afghan and foreign forces.

A statement by Isaf Joint Command said a senior Taliban leader was targeted in the attack and that he was, "member of the Taliban military commission which oversees and guides all Taliban military actions in Helmand province.

But locals claimed that all the victims in the attack were civilians.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Taliban in north western Afghanistan, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, said 50 civilians were killed in the attack.
