Eight policemen and two suspected insurgents were killed in a bomb blast in the southern Kandahar city Saturday night, local officials said.
Seven other policemen were injured in the blast when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, provincial spokesman Jawid Faisal said.
"The blast happened after the policemen defused a land mine and arrested two suspected persons and wanted to return to the military base," he said.
No group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Razaq also confirmed the report.
Insurgent are increasingly using improvised explosive devices to target Afghan and Nato troops, but a large number of the victims is civilians.
