A number of political party leaders have spoken of their support for Balkh provincial governor Atta Mohammad Noor as a presidential candidate at a conference on the upcoming elections.

Noor has indicated that there is a possibility he will nominate himself as a candidate.
Gen Abdul Rashid Dostum, who has been a sometime rival of Noor since the early 90s, was among those who voiced his support for Noor. The pair are counted among the top powerbrokers in northern Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the political groups voiced their opposition to the government and Independent Election Commission's decision to continue to use the voting cards from previous elections which have long been regarded as facilitating fraudulent voting.
The parties urged the government to be aware of the pivotal nature of the election and the importance of the role of the people.
