The Bactrian Treasure, which lay under Tillia Tepe in Sherberghan for 2,000 years, was discovered by Soviet archeologists in 1978. It was hidden in a secret place when the Soviets invaded in 1979 and kept safe during the subsequent years of war. It was "rediscovered" in 2003.

The National Museum of Afghanistan put the treasures on display and National Geographic Society then catalogued the collection.
Since then, the Bactrian Gold has since gone on display in the US, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and France.
